Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the world's richest individual, promised $10 billion to struggle climate change on Monday, labeling the trend "the biggest threat to our earth." In an Instagram post, the 56 year old billionaire said he was unveiling the Bezos Earth Fund, an effort to fund scientists, campaigners and non governmental organizations studying and combating climate change. Bezos did not specify which groups he would finance but noted that this summer the $10 billion fund would start issuing grants.
It will take collective action from big companies, small businesses, nation states, global organizations, and individuals, Bezos wrote a photo of the Earth in an Instagram caption below. Bezos ' announcement comes after Amazon takes steps to address its position in contributing to global warming and as its own staff face internal pressure.
In September, the organization announced the Climate Pledge, a pledge to reach the net zero carbon emissions goal of the Global Paris Agreement by 2040, 10 years earlier than previously agreed by most nations.
